Music Flashback: Higher Love

I believe that music connects us.  It connects to each other.  It can help us express emotions and it can connect us to that  soul or spirit self deep inside. I’m not just talking about music in church.  I’m talking about all kinds of music from tribal drumming, a beautiful ballad to a rock anthem.  If you are like me, music may form the soundtrack of your life.  When I hear an old song playing on the radio, it can take me right back to a particular event or era.  Sweet memories are often tied to the song.   I often wonder why certain old songs pop into my head at random times.

Earlier today a song was going through my head as I hummed along I was taken back to the the eighties. In 1986 when this song won record of the year, I was living in Kansas City, Missouri, working in a law firm.  It was before I gave myself permission to move to Los Angeles to follow my dreams of being an actor and writer.  I remember singing along to this song on the radio.  At the time I think I interpreted it solely as someone looking for a higher form of romantic love.  I don’t think I got the spiritual aspect of this song at all.

As the song kept going through my head, I wondered if someone was trying to send me a message? I hadn’t heard the song in a long time.   I spent some time today contemplating the Steve Winwood song HIGHER LOVE and where I might need to let the higher love flow over me and inform me.  And I got a kick out of the YouTube video which definitely gave me flashbacks as far as hairstyles and dress of the time.

HIGHER LOVE by STEVE WINWOOD and WILL JENNINGS

Think about it, there must be higher love
Down in the heart or hidden in the stars above
Without it, life is wasted time
Look inside your heart, I’ll look inside mine

Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what is fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be

Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love, oh
Bring me a higher love
Where’s that higher love, I keep thinking of?

Worlds are turning and we’re just hanging on
Facing our fear and standing out there alone
A yearning, and it’s real to me
There must be someone who’s feeling for me

Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what is fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be

Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love, oh
Bring me a higher love
Where’s that higher love, I keep thinking of?

Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love, oh
Bring me a higher love
I could rise above on a higher love

I will wait for it, I’m not too late for it
Until then, I’ll sing my song
To cheer the night along

I could light the night up with my soul on fire
I could make the sun shine from pure desire
Let me feel that love come over me
Let me feel how strong it could be

Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love, oh
Bring me a higher love
Where’s that higher love, I keep thinking of?

Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love, oh
Bring me a higher love

I know it is a good think to ask for–both for myself and for others.  Bring me a higher love.  Remind me that within me is a higher form of love that is unconditional, without judgment and can help the world be a better place.  (Never thought I’d be getting that out of an 80’s pop song!) Maybe a spirit messenger was nudging me on tonight.
