Being Brave Enough to Speak Your Truth

Being Brave Enough to Speak Your Truth is the theme of this morning’s Shifting From Scared to Sacred Show on The Soulful Sunday Experience. You can listen to me this morning at 7 a.m. PDT or anytime after on demand at the Creating Calm Network on Blog Talk Radio

Sara Bareilles’ song, “Brave” fits so well with what I am talking about on the show. I found a stripped down performance of the song on YouTube–just Sara and her piano. I love it. In this overproduced music world, it’s brave for artists to be that naked on stage! (Don’t get any ideas–she’s fully dressed! I’m talking about laying your talent out there for the world with no backup! That kind of naked!) Thank you Sara for sharing your talents to remind us how important it is to be brave.

I know how hard it can be to speak up. We want to be nice to people. We don’t want conflict. We aren’t certain that we even know what we want to say but we know we should say something. In trying to find the perfect words we hesitate. It takes courage. And when we start out to speak our truth, we often don’t do it elegantly. We can be clumsy and a little overbearing or inarticulate. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t speak our truth. It just means we need to practice being brave.

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear
And done some disappearing,
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

And since your history of silence
Won’t do you any good,
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

What words do you want to say?  What truths are you withholding?   I want to see you be brave . . .
